Letting Go of 'Could Have, Would Have, Should Have'—Living for Today

Letting Go of 'Could Have, Would Have, Should Have'—Living for Today

We all have moments where we replay the past in our minds—wondering, "What if I had acted differently? Chosen a different job, partner, or path? Would my life be better now?" It's natural to imagine how things could have unfolded, but the truth is, there’s no guarantee any alternative choice would have brought you more happiness or success. The past is history—it cannot be changed.

The Trap of Regret and What-Ifs

Reliving all the possibilities of what could have been only keeps us stuck. The reality is, nothing can be done to rewrite the past. The only thing you truly have is the present moment—here and now. Instead of wondering how things could have been different, ask yourself: "What can I do today to create a future I’ll be happy with 5 or 10 years from now?"

Taking Action in the Present

Your power lies in what you choose to do now. Start by imagining your ideal life—what does it look like? Get a journal and write it out. Break your vision into small, actionable steps. Whether you’re an artist, chef, sculptor, craftsperson, or storyteller, focus on what makes you happy and begin showing up for it every day.

Work with what you have at hand—no excuses, no explanations. Your life deserves love, attention, and success. Dedicate even thirty minutes a day to your interests, talents, or curiosities. Over time, these small steps will add up to a more fulfilling and joyful life.

Moving Forward

Let go of regret and the endless cycle of "could have, would have, should have." The only way to shape your future is to start where you are, with what you have, and move toward your dreams—one day at a time. Your best life begins with the actions you take today.
